The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recently removed or significantly trimmed a kissing scene, and reportedly other "sensual visuals," in the recently released Superman movie (James Gunn's version, released July 2025).
This decision has sparked controversy and backlash online, with many fans and even celebrities criticizing the CBFC for what they perceive as inconsistent and outdated censorship standards, especially when compared to what is allowed in mainstream Bollywood films. Reports indicate that a 33-second kissing scene between Superman and Lois Lane was cut, along with other edits and muted curse words, to secure a UA13+ rating for the film in India.
"This scene getting abruptly cut off kinda made me furious. It was one of those moments in the movie that was so fluid," a fan wrote.
However, the CBFC's stance is defendable. Superman is a UA-rated movie and not an A-rated one. Had the distributors opted for A rating, the scene would have been allowed in the Indian version.
