Prices of cinema tickets, snacks: Supreme Court to target multiplexes?

During a hearing, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday expressed strong concerns about the skyrocketing ticket prices at multiplex cinemas, making the medium of cinema increasingly "unaffordable" for the average Indian. During the proceedings, the judge pointed out the 'absurdity' of multiplexes charging as much as Rs 700 for a simple cup of coffee while questioning how ordinary people can afford to watch movies amid such inflation.

Recently, the Karnataka government passed an order mandating the capping of cinema ticket prices in the state at Rs 200. Hombale Films and other banners questioned the move and challenged it in the High Court. In the latest instance, the apex court is suggesting that the prices of Foods & Beverages must be curbed.

Cinema is not a necessity. If you can't afford it, you needn't visit theatres. The consumer has enough choices these days, especially with OTT. If she is not ready to spend Rs 300 on a ticket and Rs 350 on popcorn, she will spend her money wisely by subscribing to Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. And, some day in the future, multiplexes will reduce the prices to attract customers. Until then, market forces need to be allowed to play their game.
