Champion, starring Roshan Meka and Anaswara Rajan in the lead, is believed to have made on a budget of more than Rs 40 Cr. The pre-release non-theatrical business is pegged at around Rs 16 Cr (the value of a Netflix deal). In the first four days, the movie made Rs 12 Cr at the box office by the own admission of the makers. Unless there is a miraculous turnaround, the film's theatrical venue will not exceed the Rs 15 Cr mark.
This makes the total earnings of the movie way less than its budget. Considering these figures and assuming that the budget is indeed Rs 40 Cr, Champion has to be regarded as a loss venture.
It's likely, however, that Champion's budget is not more than Rs 25 Cr. The film's lead man is a second-time hero. The director (Pradeep Advaitham) is a newcomer. The period-based narrative might not have involved a huge cost, as those who have watched the movie will tell you.
