Rajamouli invented Holi festival of the Kalakeya variety

The war episode in the second half of Baahubali: The Beginning was shot for 70 working days at a stretch. SS Rajamouli has revealed a funny incident during the shoot.

"One of the shoot days coincided with the festival of Holi. The Kalakeyas had to be in black. Their make-up took about two hours. Since there was no gap, they had to be on set. I strictly warned them not to play Holi with colours. I told them to apply black colours if they wanted. They played Holi with black powder," Rajamouli has said.

The Kalakeya element in the film received backlash from critics when Baahubali was released in 2015. Critics pointed out that the Kalakeya tribe, who are the main antagonists in the battle sequence, were depicted with artificially dark skin and a savage, primitive look, contrasting sharply with the fair-skinned, "beautiful" rulers of Mahishmati.
