A few weeks ago, there were reports that one Chaitanya has cheated a number of gullible people by posing himself as the popular playback singer Sunitha. The size of the scam is actually big. Latest reports say that Chaitanya has defrauded various individuals of Rs 1.75 Cr over a period of time.
His modus operandi was familiar. In one instance, he got in touch with a woman from Kothapeta in Hyderabad and gave her a WhatsApp number, saying that it's Sunitha's number. Since the woman is a fan of Sunitha, she messaged on the number. But Chaitanya blocked her number initially with the aim of appearing bona fide. He made the woman message on another number. This time, he responded normally and chatted with the woman by assuming the identity of Sunitha. He made her transfer monies to his bank account on one or another pretext. It was not until a few such transfers that the woman grew suspicious. She approached the Rachakonda police and that's how the whole fraud came to light.
Reacting to the news, Sunitha issued an appeal to everyone. "I am surprised, shocked, and deeply hurt. A number of men and women have been cheated by Chaitanya. It's my responsibility to tell everyone that I don't know that person. How do you get fooled so easily? Imposters misusing the names of celebs are too many out there. Please don't believe such fraudsters," Sunitha said.
