The other day, singer Chinmayi Sripada put out an Instagram story in which she said that her husband, Rahul Ravindran, seeks the permission of their two-year-old daughter before hugging her. The post sparked a row, with many Netizens wondering why a father is expected to seek the consent of his own child before hugging or kissing her. "What if Chinmayi falls sick? Can Rahul become the child's caretaker? If the child says 'no', who will take care of the child?", a Netizen asked. Another social media user asked, "Does this consent-seeking apply only to hugging/kissing. Or, does it apply to activities like changing the diaper?" another asked.
On Tuesday, Rahul defended his wife. He said that consent is a must. "Don’t hug someone forcibly when they are not in the mood. I find that it’s the most natural thing to do. In fact, it would be extremely uncomfortable hugging someone when they are explicitly saying they are not in the mood to. It’s quite simple really," he wrote.
Rahul Ravindran and Chinmayi are truly made for each other!
