In recent times, 'Rana Naidu' has contributed the most to the perception that some OTT shows are strictly off the charts for the family audience. Venkatesh and Rana Daggubati painstakingly urged everyone to watch the web series alone and never with family. Social media has been abuzz with the narrative that 'Rana Naidu' is a poor imitation of the West-style adult content.
Amidst this, Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday suggested that censorship on OTT is an idea whose time has come. He sounded a warning bell in the process.
As per the BJP leader, abusive language in the name of creative expression cannot be tolerated. He added that the government is serious about complaints about the "increase in obscene content" on streaming platforms.
He added that his Ministry won't "back down if strict action" has to be taken against OTT platforms for promoting "obscenity".
The government's pushback will most certainly result in a backlash from a section of viewers. Shows that are meant for adults are anyways not supposed to be watched by children. Why should the government police web shows like 'Rana Naidu' in such a case?
