Krishnam Raju, the veteran actor who was known as the Rebel Star in his heyday as a matinee idol, is no more. He passed away in the wee hours of Sunday.
Aged 83, he is survived by his wife and three daughters. Having acted in nearly 190 movies, Krishnam Raju was known for essaying a variety of roles in his illustrious career. 'Bhakta Kannappa' and 'Tandra Paparayudu', among others, are considered his most popular titles. A recipient of multiple awards and recognitions, 'Radhe Shyam', headlined by his nephew Prabhas, was his last film. He played an astrologer in that movie.
Born in 1940, Krishnam Raju also was a politician. He was associated with the Congress party first and then the BJP.
Condolences are pouring in from all quarters. Chiranjeevi wrote that the departed soul encouraged him like an elder brother when he was new to the film industry. "The loss is going to be felt by his fans and the film industry," the actor added. Nandamuri Balakrishna said that Krishnam Raju was synonymous with kindness. "He left an indelible mark in the film industry and politics. Our family shared a special bond with him. When he fell sick, I used to inquire about his health on a regular basis," Balayya said.
Superstar Mahesh Babu wrote that he was shocked. "A very sad day for me and the entire industry. His life, his work and his immense contribution to cinema will always be remembered," the actor wrote, adding that his deepest condolences are with Prabhas. Jr NTR tweeted, "Deeply saddened by Krishnam Raju Garu's passing away. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace."
