Geetmala was one of the most popular radio shows ever. Listened to by millions of Indians every Wednesday on All India Radio, the show was hosted by Ameen Sayani. Sayani, regarded as the most popular celebrity in the history of Indian radio, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91.
A tribute by NDTV says that Sayani produced or hosted over 54,000 radio show episodes and 19,000 commercial spots in his six-decade-long career. His Geetmala used to attract fan mail like never before in the history of Indian radio. In a week, about 65,000 letters were received by All India Radio.
During the Nehru era, commercial film songs were banned from AIR for some years. At that time, Sayani worked for Ceylon Radio.
In its tribute, Doordarshan National wrote, "Ameen Sayani, the man behind radio's golden era has passed away. One of the most popular radio announcers who accomplished prominence in South Asia." Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several celebs from Bollywood have mourned the demise of Sayani.
