'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' is not a clever screenplay. Here is why...

Is 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' a testament to clever screenwriting? Many believe so. Positive reviews for the film have praised writer-director Vivek Athreya for crafting a tightly written screenplay.

But, if you dig deeper, the contrived nature of the screenplay becomes evident. Spoilers Ahead:

In a fight sequence, Surya (Nani) stops himself from landing a punch on a baddie in the nick of the moment. The clock in the pub strikes midnight, marking the end of Saturday. As per his rule book, he must not fight it out on any other day.

The clock in the pub, however, had been tampered with. It was actually ten minutes fast, meaning Saturday hadn't quite ended. With renewed determination, Surya returns to the fight. Surya discovers that it is still Saturday, thanks to a fortuitous co-incidence. It is another matter that someone who religious adheres to the 'Fight only on Saturday' principle is no reckless as to not do a double-check of the time when every minute matters.

Now, the clock in the pub shows the wrong time because of a young lad with whom Surya had a tryst in the past. Look at the quantum of coincidences on display. Everything is an accident here. If it was a Harish Shankar movie, everyone would have said, "Bro, give us a break!".

Such rare coincidences are justified or rationalized through one of these two narrative gimmicks in our films: mother sentiment and divine intervention. 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' resorts to the former.
