The 'Ponniyin Selvan' films, which are two in number, are said to be making Lyca Productions the most profitable production house these days in absolute terms. While a small film like 'The Kashmir Files' (Hindi) became a terrific blockbuster earlier this year, the two 'PS' films are fetching unprecedented profits in the expensive film category.
As per a trade report, both 'PS-I' and 'PS-2' have cost Lyca Productions not more than Rs 250 Cr. Let's suppose that the budget is Rs 300 Cr. This amount has been recovered by the producers, which includes Madras Talkies, from just the first part on account of theatricals and non-theatrical rights.
Mani Ratnam shocked everyone, including SS Rajamouli, by shooting both parts in just 150 working days. This seems to have saved a hell lot of money for the Lyca. When the second part releases and becomes a big hit, imagine the margin of profits they are going to make in 2023.
Meanwhile, 'PS-I' has become the highest-grossing Tamil movie in the US by minting 5.5 million US, leaving behind '2.0' in just 10 days of its release.
