'Mr. Bachchan', starring Ravi Teja in the lead, was not ready to be released in August. But a streaming giant forced the hands of the film's producer. This is rumouredly true of 'Double iSmart', too. Both these films are slated to be released on the same date (August 15).
A few years ago, OTT platforms used to schedule post-theatrical movie releases as per the decisions taken by film producers. However, lately, the tables have turned. Streaming giants are almost dictating terms to film producers.
This was expected to happen. The reliance of film producers on digital rights for a substantial chunk of revenues has hit through the roof in recent years. Theatrical footfalls have weakened considerably. Heroes and directors are apparently not willing to slash their fees. With budgets out of control, producers have had to submit to the whims of OTT platforms. Sometimes, this has resulted in quality being affected.
The suffering was inevitable. Streaming giants in particular and OTT platforms in general are enjoying unheard-of leeway over film producers.
